Have You Seen Any Interesting Cars On The Road Lately?

I’ve this and similar floating about on Facebook recently.
Same here. I quite like it apart from the wheels. Minilights might look better. My dad had an 1800 - i think they used a detuned MG engine? My Dad's replaced his Radford Mini Cooper S with a Works spec engine when i came along. Im not sure he's totally forgiven me to be honest!
Allegedly that same car later became an Estate car :)
 
Sturdily built they got the unflattering nickname of "LANDCRAB" they also did a 2.2 LITRE six cylinder version for the home market based on the four-cylinder Austin Maxi engine. If I remember correctly they were plagued with overheating problems due to a lack of cooling between the cylinders in order to keep the engine block short enough for the transverse configuration.

I had that 2.2 in the Princess i had. It was nice and smooth with twin SU's.

I drove a 2.2 Landcrab back in the 80's. I jumped out of a Sud and it was like entering an Edwardian gentlemen's club.

The engine was mated to the world's most dim-witted 3 speed auto and it seemed to turn petrol into (very mellifluous) noise with very little discernible forward motion.
 
My mate's dad had a 2.2 which was pretty exotic for Fife in the 70's. Like the CX he replaced it with, very smoooooooth.
Yes the hydragas suspension was great, if a little wallowy. I found out you could lower it so mine was maybe one of the first "Stance" cars! In my defence i was 18 at the time!

On a separate note, the librarian at school gave me a rusted out Austin 1100 which had failed its MOT.

Behind my mate's house was a private road with a row of 10 or so garages on a very slight incline. The incline meant that each concrete forecourt was sloped up to the next one.

We established that if you drove along them fast enough (c 20mph) you could get the Hydrolastic suspension into a sort of positive feeback loop so violent that if you slammed the brakes on hard enough at the end the rear wheels would leave the ground by a good three feet.

I don't think that's quite what Issigonis had in mind when he interconnected the front and rear but it made us lads cry with laughter.
 
Me too, it was a nice relaxed drive and surprisingly reliable

I remember being amazed at how comfortable the rear velour seats were. That coupled with the ride and the tunes from the engine made it a great place in which to be wafted. He replaced it with a CX which was also a great experience.

Mind you, at the time I was used to being bounced about by solid axles and cart springs in the back of Anglia's, Escorts and Avengers. The bar had not been set very high......

I was borrowing car pool Princesses for long runs in the 1970's.
Seemed pretty luxurious at the time, good for a comfortable 80mph, less spartan than a Ford, and more reliable than the Citroen CX

I read somewhere today that the Princess was the first car where the wiper stubs were hidden by the bonnet. If true that’s a nice factoid for a Friday!
