The EV fact thread

Re LeShuttle, I just checked online (planning a trip to the Continent in April), and there seem to be no restrictions at current on EVs.

Regarding the Chinese holiday makers.... I wonder, how did all these EVs get to Hainan Island in the first place....? Or did the ferry companies change the rules last-minute?
The Chinese new year runs about 16 days, my guess is they drifter over there in batches of 18 over the days and completely forgot the rules when they all tried to get back to the mainland.

That only a battery every 400,000 miles or so....seems reasonable....a motor every 100k?....less so. But apparently the later ones are different and are good for 300k plus.
You’re right - the first gen RWD motors made a whining noise due to a bad bearing - they replaced them and refurb the old ones. Less down time than a repair.

The new motors are trouble free on the whole.

I almost bought an EV today, well financed one. A Honda e:Ny1 for £179 per month, no deposit and 6,000 miles per annum. They were inundated with enquiries so up to £229 per month after lunchtime.

Still a sensational deal I’d say. It has a 256 mile range, so it should manage 170-ish miles woyhout too much trouble. Turns out that it’s a group 39 Insuramce so not great for Junior D.

I was so close, it’s the sort of deal that I always miss out on - this time I was in on it early but just didn’t like it enough. I could have parked it next to the Astra

"considering investigating"? That sound like Sir Humphrey Appleby's speak for "do nothing"...

From the article:
"High interest rates are among the reasons behind a slowdown in demand for usually pricier EVs - which can be as much as £10,000 more expensive than their petrol or diesel equivalents"

From:

"...growth outlook remains weak. With monetary policy becoming increasingly visible and a weaker-than-expected recovery in China, global growth in 2024 is projected to be lower than in 2023."

Inflation and interest rates going up, the economy is not growing as expected. Not a great time for spreading the use of expensive new technology among consumers.

Blimey, just when you thought it was safe to get the bus home ….

To be fair, this thread has enabled companies like Mercedes, Toyota and Aston Martin to reconsider their plans for the EV transition.

Without our insight, and concern about cost and performance, Mercedes might still be going 100% "flattened potato" by 2035.

How MB hadn't noticed that most of the Southern Hemisphere doesn't give a stuff about EV's yet is hard to understand.

Even when Europeans & North Americans are still "a bit sceptical about the cost / benefit.

They unleashed a pox on the World in 2020 without remorse, selling dodgy batteries to Europeans won’t even tickle their conscience.

To be fair, if China had spent the last decade putting their 1,800,000,000 cyclists and walkers into ICE vehicles, we'd be well and truly stuffed when it comes to climate change.

China has half a million pure EV buses in service. How many buses do we have? 2,000?

Not that anyone cares if Texas catches fire, California gets big snow, Ski resorts disappear, or Norfolk goes under water.
