W211 Auto Gearbox "problems" Help? Or is it me?

Hi you all !
I hope you all are enjoying your MB's like I did

So there we go, I have a 2002 W211 E240 (2.6V6) Elegance, 4speed AUTO...

So I enjoyed my MB till like feew weeks ago, then I noticed my gearbox is kinda playing up. I've changed the oil on it 2 months ago (MB Parts + trusted friend mechanic)

So I dont know maybe its me, lets say I'm going downhill very slowly (sort of coasting) car/ gearbox kinda jerks around, then if I;'m driving normally gears at times wont change nicely,and they change whenever they want.... Basically I'm getting worried because I know gearboxes are sensitive

If I'm going up the hill (big one) (bigger one) car woudnt stay in one place, it would go back,as much as I know automatic cars shoudnt do that? ?

I dont know is it me or the gearbox, P.S- If I drive very carefuly,the gearbox seems to be OK.

And P.S.S- Lets say I'm doing 20mph or whatnot if i accelarate or break and then accelarate there is a "cluncing" noise from my gearbox.... like I dont know how to exxplain it properly, But if any1 had a similar problem or something like that - then you should know what I mean, and hopefuly you can help me out !!

P.S.S.S - 2nd hand gearbox is about £350 - 450 ? Am I better off just getting one of them?

Have you checked the transmission fluid level ?

When was it last changed and was the filter changed at the same time ?

How many miles has the car done?

Before you start throwing money at replacement gearboxes (which may be no better), take your car to a good MB Indy and get it diagnosed properly.

The car is at 95k at the momment

Get the fluid changed with the correct spec and filled up to the correct level. Change filter and gesket with genuine merc parts.

It might just need gearbox adaptations reset. This can be done via star or some OBD scanners.

You say it clunks...could be the propshaft joint.coupling/doughnut. These do go bad after a while.

If ATF oil and filter has been changed (assuming genuine MB spec oil and parts), then as above it may just need adaptations resetting via STAR....as your in London get it booked in at WG Harrow (ask for Terry)

Hopefully your comment that you have a 4 speed box is an error as you should have a 5 speed and not because you only have 4 gears!
Fluid level at the correct temp is first point of call, along with codes being read and cleared. You may have contamination if you have the valeo radiator problem which I believe was on early W211s

DSB SL AMG - Yes everything was changed, I used Genuine MB gearbox oil kit(everything included) So gearbox reset? How much would he charge if you know please?


bob6600 - its a triptronic, And it shows it has 4 gears (sorry first MB I ever had,not familiar yet-so I think its 4g auto/triptronic) And what is valeo radiator - i have no idea mate. If youre talking about my actuall radiator its sweet as a nut, never had any problems with it...Thank you guys !!!

In tiptronic mode it should show 1-2-3-4-D, that is a 5 speed 'box as the 'D' denotes it will use all 5 gears.

Early W211's had Valeo radiators and these leaked glycol into the ATF system. Do a search on Valeo radiator and there are plenty threads on what to look for.
