Another newbie - C63 AMG Coupe

Going back to the very nice AMG fuel filler cap, are these available/fitting the 205? A proper car needs a proper fuel cap. So disappointed in the latest Ferraris which have no cap at all, just the flap locking shut. You need that unscrewing metal feeling. Ferrari did it so well and I think AMGs should do it also.
Double check when ordering but I’m pretty sure they fit the 205.

So this was the part I ordered, doesn't actually say it fits the W204 but it fits mine fine. It does list the *205 models though so am sure you'll be fine - AMG fuel filler cap chrome Genuine Mercedes-AMG

I'm popping out to the garage shortly so will see if I have a part number on the box it came in, you may be able to get one from your local dealer rather than order from that website. There's a minimum order value of 160 EUR for UK orders and you'll have to pay import duty and VAT before you'll receive it.

Back to the wheels, I took the car for a run last night, much smoother and quieter on fast roads above 70, drives like it should. Returned home a twisty B road and stretched it's legs a bit, the grip available from the car is fantastic!

Glad to hear that everything has been sorted and your patience has paid off. Be nice to know who the dealership was as granted the car had some issues yet from what I've read of your posts they've done the right thing and rectified all the issues.

Aaah, just when I thought it was all sorted! Maybe I jinxed it by enjoying the car yesterday morning...

Popped out in the afternoon, got to the bottom of our road and noticed the car sounded odd, felt sluggish, vibrated at idle and shook badly above about 2000 rpm. Turned around and parked up at home, scanned for fault codes later and found:
  • P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
  • P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
  • P0306: Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected
  • P0307: Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected
  • P0308: Cylinder 8 Misfire Detected
Cleared the codes and put it back in the garage for the night, seemed to be idling OK then so not sure what's going on. It felt like when one coilpack has gone bad (from past experience with previous cars, not this one) but it's odd that the car shows codes for all cylinders on one bank - unless there's only one misfire sensor per bank rather than per cylinder?

Feel for you, more bad luck than seems fair. I can’t suggest anything as it’s out of my area of knowledge, perhaps your local specialist could offer some suggestions over the phone.

Cheers! I drove the car to the gym and back at lunchtime and it seemed fine, no codes showing on arrival there or on return. If/when it happens again I'll give them a call.

Did it happen whilst the fuel was running low? Is it possible some water got into some connections, had it been raining previously or you washed the car?

This strangely happened to my car the night before I sold it whilst washing the EML started to flash, cleared codes drove absolutely fine no loss of power of shakes. (not a c63).

All the best

Possible failing crankshaft position sensor but also check camshaft position sensors @ bank2 aswell. 👍

Forget to mention, if replace, replace with only OEM Bosch from MB. There are some aftermarket and fake sensors floating about on ebay, don't use them. 👍

Thanks for the input folks.

This hasn't happened again since that first time. It really did feel like a dead coilpack/one cylinder down but the codes would seem to suggest otherwise. I can't remember what the fuel state was at the time and I don't recall whether it was wet or just washed either, I don't think so.

If it was the camshaft adjuster then surely this would happen all the time until it was fixed or replaced? How could the adjuster actually cause this; there's only so much range of adjustment in them and once the oil pressure reaches normal they operate normally don't they?

Just the crankshaft, worth checking. But also the coilpacks and camshaft position sensors too 👍

Checking in for a wee update. No recurrence of that rough running/fault codes issue since then but will keep an eye on it. Listening out more for the camshaft adjuster rattle for any changes, in case it was somehow caused by that. Intending to get the rebuild kit from Canada and hopefully do that over the winter. Shame I'm not closer to Essex as there's someone down that way that specialises in rebuilding the adjusters.

Had to change the right cornering lamp bulb. I've never had a harder time changing a lightbulb in my life. Old one came out easy enough but it took several attempts and cost me a lot of skin off my knuckles. I still got the warning on the dash after the new bulb was in but hoping that just needs a drive cycle to clear because if the new bulb is shot or it's a different issue then I'm not interested :)

Got another little upgrade in the post last week, fitted today:

PXL_20230801_170419730.jpg

Ordered from eBay, came without the plastic frame which clips into the silver surround so I also ordered an old standard one (so I didn't have to butcher my existing standard shifter and glued the new gaiter to that. I like the look of the AMG badge on the shifter more than the Mercedes logo and the leather feels a little nicer. The knob sits lower on the lever though so gives the feel of a shorter throw. It secures on the lever by a small grub screw you turn with a small Allen wrench through a little hole on the front of the knob so we'll see how well it holds. Around £100 cheaper than the OEM 507 edition shifter though!

I wonder who that may be 😁👍

Love the gear shifter, looks different👍 For a second I thought you did a manual conversion before I read the update 🙂

You mean the guy in Essex? The guy I'm thinking of goes by the name Murder.63 on instagram, that's not yourself is it? Or are there more than one specialists in this field?

Ha, no - I like a decent auto box ;)

Not the same dude, he is on ebay too. I can DIY rebuild with my eyes closed as I've done it several times on my car. Shame you live so far away, could have helped you out 🙂

Shame nobody offers an exchange service for the rebuilt adjusters - pay the cash, receive a rebuilt set with the upgraded plates etc., swap them out, return your duff ones and get a partial refund. I did ask the guy on Insta if he did that, he said the closest he could do would be if I removed mine and sent them to him, he'd rebuild and return them so I just reinstall. I asked for a price for that but he never replied.

I guess by the time the things are off the car the rebuild is probably not that difficult? Hardest part seems to be getting the front plates off without destroying any of the bolts, then getting them retorqued correctly?

The adjusters are easy. The difficulty I found was the tight space to reach out to the bottom T30 bolts that hold down the top camshaft covers. It's a bit tight to access underneath due to the towers. On the S211, bank 2 is more closer to the tower than the other side, so getting a T30 socket in there is much harder. The way round this is to use a shorty T30 bit on a 1/4" rachet, it just about works. No problems on bank1, there is a little more space between the engine and tower allowing a bit more access. 🙂

Hmm, sounds about as much fun as doing spark plugs on a 5 litre Jag XKR then! I'm sure I'll be hitting you up when the time comes....
