Now that's what a Mercedes should look like :)

I do still like the W211 myself.

Do you not think that this looks a bit.....

The image that PMP shared and the one in Mike's profile pic, definitely amplify the dimensions of the body, somehow.

So you don't have through-load on the estate?
The protective tub is just for the rear luggage area, not the through-load area too.

So this is what the original buyer got for his £70k:

Iridium Silver
Comand
Comfort Luxury Package
DAB
Designo Burr Walnut Wood trim (more of that later....)
Full glass roof with sunroof
Garage door opener
HK logic 7 Surround sound
Memory package
Night View Assist Plus
Rear Entertainment System
Rear Side Airbags
Reverse Camera
Roof Liner Alcantara grey
TV Tuner
Tyre Pressure Monitoring
Wood/Leather steering wheel
Privacy Glass
Shallow boot
18" AMG wheels

Apart from an insignificant dink in the rear bumper, the only issue with the car is fading of the Burr Walnut in the front of the car. As "the S212 fan club" will know this was a problem with the 2009-2013 W212's & S212's. My intention is to get the trim refinished or replaced at some point. I'll report on that in due course.

The car has only been serviced six times in its 24,000 miles, twice by the main dealer, so it's not as perfect as my past cars which were pure Main Dealer annually serviced cars, but as E500 S212's are so rare (perhaps only 12 in the UK?) it was a necessary sacrifice for such a well specified car.

Back to the subject of 18" vs 17" wheels, I have to say I still prefer the limousine ride of my black S211 on its 17's,
but I'll give it a couple of months before deciding whether to change these AMG wheels.

I've had this 385bhp 5.5 litre engine / gearbox combo before on my S500L and S211: it's fantastic for my kind of driving

Have to say, with 24k on the clock, apart from the burr walnut, the car drives, looks and feels like brand new.

It's just a shame that it took me so long to find this wretched thing.

Now I just need to sell the S211 before buying that SL500 I've been talking about.

I have to say I like the faded look of the wood. If it were mine, I think I'd be trying to get the wood on the steering wheel to match.

I know what you mean, and you're right. The light faded front is reminiscent of "proper" 1960's & 70's trim
But then the trim in the back does match the trim on the steering wheel. Which could be described as being a bit... "Lexus."

"Some say" I'm too fussy, "all we know" is that details matter.
I know I've paid top money (too much) for a high spec car (cough, on 24k miles), but given that I've "saved" £55k, it's no issue to get collars and cuffs to match. I'll be getting advice on which path too take. The issue with wood that has already faded, of course, being that it's likely to fade further, as the years go by.

It really is odd for wood trim to fade only on the front. Is it the same on both front doors?
Maybe you could get in contact with some wood trim restorer who could fix it with sending and applying a fresh coat of varnish, unless it's cheaper just buying from MB new wood trims.

Same all the way round the front: passenger door, across the dash, including console, and round onto driver's door.
The rear of the car is protected from UVA so no damage.
Can only think that the car spent a few summers "somewhere nice."

That's not what I was implying, though I clearly didn't articulate my thoughts... it's just that a tub with the seats down would impede anything that would need to lie flat.

I "disagree" that you've overpaid (though this may be relative to your personal budget).

With regards to the re-veneering of the wood, this may be a nice opportunity to engage an atelier, such as d:class or o'rourke interiors. A chap on PH did a splendid job on his jaaaag wood with a satin finish and it looks both modern and spectacular. He had no previous experience but followed the guidance of a specialist that also contributes to the forum/thread.

Ah, I'm with you. You are right, although the tub is only about an inch deep and the sides are a little flexible. It would depend on what you are loading. We've had an oak hall stand in the rear of the SB with seats folded down and the tub rim was flexible enough that the weight meant it was still flat enough for what was needed.

Absolutely love these, proper sleeper! Lovley spec to, the original buyer really went classy with this one. Just waiting for the day for one of these to pop up with the 4.7 bi turbo engine😴

Well done Mike! Very pleased for you. I bought mine within a day or two too nearly two years ago now. I do like the sound of the Night Vision option which I’ve only ever seen on S classes. Pity about the wood fade but hey it’s a small problem which, as you say, you’ll fix. Mine had a few scratches and a little dent which I’ve rectified. Surely it must be time for at least an S212 E500 gathering ...? Mine is on 18 inch wheels - mine is Sport trim. I thought Avantgardes had 17’s but maybe I’m wrong. Mine didn’t have a reverse cam but I got one fitted and it’s very useful. Enjoy Sir!

Yes, I remember you getting yours back then too !
Night Vision's amusing - I had it on my S500 - but useless. I refer you, discreetly, to Mister Clarkson's comment on it's only real use.
You're right about wheels. 17" was the normal for this car - the purchase invoice shows the customer paid for a wheel swop.
Best wishes
