Have You Seen Any Interesting Cars On The Road Lately?

C Reg SAAB 900 turbo 3 door in black. My dream car when I was a lad😀
A friend of mine had one of those back in the day, an automatic.

I drove it and it scared the cr*p out of me pulling onto a roundabout with fast moving traffic from a standstill. Pull away, lag, lag, lag (traffic from the right now getting dangerously close), lag, lag, then whoosh! off it would go like a scalded cat.

Mrs S's uncle had a black 5 door. It was a great car but you're right up to around 2500ish revs nothing happened; above that, the boost gauge went off the scale and the flippin' thing just took off 💨

Not this actual car, but the same colour - it’s a Tempest, the donor car being a Reliant Kitten (4 wheel Reliant). I was given a lift home in it a couple of days ago. Very snug…

Spotted in Wedmore, Somerset:

Looked in fantastic condition - the apparent marks on the bonnet are just 'wipe' marks.
Looks sweet, despite being in "hearing-aid beige".

There's no doubt about it, there were some colour choices in the late 70's / early 80's that haven't aged well 😵‍💫

Reminds me of test driving a Rover 820 turbo vitesse decades ago, salesman had driven it to a nearby village then parked for me to take over, parked 30 yards behind a parked car on a quiet road, I pulled away and put the foot down a little to go round the parked car, turbo kicked in as did torque steer that nearly pulled me left into the parked car, scary. Despite that we bought the car, PX'd it within a year and dropped about £6k on the price, most expensive car I've ever owned! Just to add to the fun, a few months after PX'ing it the new owner contacted me, the engine had suffered the well known head gasket failure and he wanted me to pay for the repair - told him to "go forth and multiply!!".

I did like the 820 Vitesse. Great cars. I used to drive them a lot in my late teens when they were new. I During a summer job my boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss had one, as did a few other senior managers.

Another summer jobber and I used to use them to go back and forth to another office, bringing back boxes of files. We drove in a spirited manner whilst unladen, and made the trip many times that particular summer.

I think it was when we arrived back after possibly our final run that the other lad crashed into one of our very best customer’s cars in the car park. Luckily the customer was jolly civil about it all, luckily for him!
