Have You Seen Any Interesting Cars On The Road Lately?

Funnily enough a sadly passed friend had one of those, trembler ignition on the dashboard, I'd made a teak battery box for a Model T of his, he'd given me the wrong dimensions but what I made was perfect for the trembler ignition gear and looked "period" on the dashboard. IIRC the car's name was Chloe, and I made another box for the Model T (which I christened Hattie with a brass placque on the top of the box) as it was to be his wife's car and Hattie was our nickname for her (after matron Hattie Jacques).

Strictly speaking it wasn’t on the road but a rare sight and worth sharing. The Suktan of Brunei commissioned AMG to build ten 300 SL with M119 6.0 V8 and upgraded suspension, brakes, and some other changes. He took delivery of eight of them, of which this is one.

A long departed chap I knew had one of those.

An oddity was that they used an "atmospheric" inlet valve. What on earth's that? Well, it's similar to a regular poppet valve, but it isn't opened by a camshaft, it has a light spring to close it and relies on depression in the cylinder on the downstroke to cause atmospheric pressure to open it. The spring encourages it to close at the start of the compression stroke and then as cylinder pressure builds it stays closed allowing combustion.

As lovely as it is (and it is a very lovely thing) I can’t believe you omitted mention of the glorious SZ next to it! 😳
