If you had £8k or so to spend on a car ...

I looked at the 350Z to buy new when they first came out. Bit plasticy inside?

Agreed, most Nissans are to be honest. But, it is a pretty looking thing, and fast, and has a nice noise when its decatted and has a big set of twins

A nice 129 500 / 320 or even a nice 230, they are well within this range now

I just bought a nice Porsche 996 for £9k, so they are in range too

Probably not a popular choice but it would be an old Land Rover Defender with a galvanised chassis.
No limit to the customisation and NOBODY pulls out in front of you.
A V8 is a storming laugh but a chipped diesel comes close and is easier on the fuel.

I had a similar dilemma 3 years ago but didn't want the MX5 as it feels like everyone has one.
I ended up with an Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 Twin Spark (916 model) on an 03 plate. They are relatively cheap to buy and great fun to own and drive.
I have had a smile on my face ever since !!!!

Might be interesting to go about it another way, rather than setting a max budget.
See how much performance or how much fun you can get for the lowest price! Like a top gear challenge almost!

You can take a risk on something with huge mileage or no history if its throw away money and just scrap it if/when it blows up or fails the mot!

I love the man maths slowly creeping into this thread.

Hi all,
No problems, C32 with mods to replace my C320!
Regards,
Chalpkin.

Another suggestion is a R129 but instead of a 5 litre go for a 320 straight 6 M104 engine.

I think that the last year of production was 1998 and after that the 320 engine was a noisy V6.

Simple. 500 SEC late eighties, turn of nineties.

^^. Obviously 560 if you find a good one...

And there is a 560 sec for sale on autotrader - 91, 110k miles, 7995.

That money gets you quite a lot of RX8 which is a bit of a performance bargain in a slightly different way from the 350z which has already been mentioned.

Actually test drove one at that price point today though a bit nervous about issues with the ****el engine.

Have a look here for any buying advice:

Make sure you get it compression tested on a proper rotary compression tester. :thumb:
