Serious vid: Those who feel invulnerable providing they are not exceeding speed limit

I think speed is always relevant. On a three lane motorway 56mph or 60mph is a practical, satisfactory speed, but on a single carriageway, with heavy rain, poor visibility, that same speed might not be suitable? I am always surprised when folks believe the maximum permit-able speed should be seen as the accepted speed, no matter what the conditions?

During the footage that we saw, at no time did I see the lorry inconvenience any other road user, BUT.... at no time did I have a view of what was taking place with any oncoming traffic? What was apparent was this lorry was going far faster than any other road user in the visible conditions but my main complaint is against the car driver! That person had absolutely NO idea of oncoming hazards and both the car driver and passenger decided this episode was worthy of recording?

The lorry should not have been doing 90 kph on that road John.
The legal limit on that road for an LGV is 40mph (64.5 kph), so he was in the wrong for speeding anyway, but I do agree about the car driver:eek:
The lorry overtakes, the car blindly follows. The lorry pulls back in and there is another lorry coming the other way at 40 tonnes (maximum weight in continent), the car slams into lorry and bye bye occupants.

There is a call in this country to change the limit from 40mph on single carriageway roads though, to suit road conditions and type of road.
By this, I mean if there is a raod such as the A303, where there is 6-7 miles of single carriageway, but is straight.
Everyone complains about getting stuck behind lorries, but if we stuck to these limits, you would be stuck behind us even more.

I think the title of the thread is unfortunate and perhaps it should be aimed at those of us that feel they are invulnerable providing they are not exceeding a speed limit. The car driver in this particular case seems to have a death wish. :)

John

Edit :) The A303 is a disgrace and should have been modified many, many years ago.

Having experienced a white-knuckle drive as a passenger across Poland last year i can say that the antics of that lorry driver were `normal`.
Overtaking a vehicle which was already overtaking another vehicle also seemed acceptable!

Yes 40 is too slow for many A Roads. Look at various stretches of the A5 as an example.

Sitting at 40 and car drivers bike riders just start taking silly chances to overtake. Its about time something gets done.

Do you think the speed limits have failed to take into account the performance\stopping capabilities of a modern truck?

The A303 is an atrocious road and I wonder if it is better to go via the M4\M5?

They are no different to any other lorry in Europe.

The speed regulator on the lorry has been disabled with a modified smart-card available in Berlin. He can drive much faster than other heavy vehicles. Normally it is not possible because most are operating at the same speed limit.

If I remember correctly the speed limit for trucks on single carriageways in Poland is in fact 80 kph, but he was still speeding

I asked one of my drivers today (Polish) and he said it changed not long ago, but no-one takes any notice of the limits.
He said if you get caught speeding, you pay your on the spot fine (bribe:rolleyes: ) and off you go.
