Have You Seen Any Interesting Cars On The Road Lately?

You’d need balls of steel to drive that about today. Clearly the owner/driver is minted. 🧐👏
Methinks a dealer running an errand before a Wimbledon related buyer rocks up to look at it.

I did wonder whether it was one of the cheapo RML restomods (£1.5 million), but it can't be as it seems to have a (dodgy) MoT history going back to 2005.

It's so sad to see these things being used as pieces of art, rather than as something to drive.

We have a couple of cars that look like those full time round my way, but it's someone called Mr Doodle who has done street graphics in Ashford but lives in Tenterden and drives a car looking that way around town!

The plate with the IN prefix is Ingolstadt, so almost certainly Audi. HN is Heilbronn - the headquarters of Steyr, who do automotive subcontracting for various companies.

"Old residents:"

Jensen Healey. Mid-70's, in BRG

William Towns and Donald Healey designed for Jensen Motors who took a punt on a new Lotus engine.

Surprisingly cheap these days, if you can find one. No one knows what they are.

My mate bought a white one in the mid 70s from Roger Clarke Garages in the East Midlands. Traded in a nice reliable MGB.
Nothing but trouble, and traded it for a TVR 3000M. Glutton for punishment I hear you say!

Sorry ..
( And there was me thinking that the Pininfarina styling would be right up your street ) 😢

I'll wait for one of our resident experts to let us know Chris..
It is....even with the soft Focus wedding style blurry photography!

Quite.
Watching Bonhams sales at Goodwood at the mo is depressing watching. Stunning vehicles that have been locked away for years, only to reappear to be sold on again for more profit 🙃

But is it profit?

On is it a little bit of inflation and a great lump of renovation, maintenance and storage costs?

^^ This ^^

Mate of mine has a stunning Integrale Evo2 which he’s had for about 16 years.

Worth around £80-90,000.

Subtract the purchase price, engine rebuild, glass out respray, keeping it in a carcoon, tax, insurance and serving and there ain’t much profit.

If you put £17000 in a high interest account in 2006 what would it now be worth?

Tough one. Interest rates fly all over the place

Simple average inflation makes it worth £28k now, according to the Bank of England. But that’s just inflation, not investment return.

A 17 year return from equities at 8% compound? That would make it worth £62k now.

As discussed, don’t forget renovation, maintenance, insurance and storage etc.

I just watched this one go for £36k. "In need of recommissioning."

Bonhams : 1976 Aston Martin V8 'Series 3' Sports Saloon Chassis no. V8/11516/RCA Engine no. V8/540/1516

A colleague had one 25 years ago which I poo-pooed because of its handling. They're heavyweight beasts, hard on the arms and legs to drive around London. In 1998 it was worth no more than £20k

Owning one is a pleasure, not an investment.

The fun's got to be in the restoration. Like this one from this afternoon.

Buy a chassis and a few boxes of bits (engine, gearbox, brakes and stuff) and just put it back together again.

(I know a bloke who does it for a living - for other people)

Bonhams : 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon Project Chassis no. DB5/1500/R Engine no. 400/1304 (see text)

I wouldn’t fancy restoring something like a DB5 for fun. It’d scare the shit out of me.
