The UK Politics & Brexit Thread

Tough on crime?

They were just spouting the usual BS they were so accustomed to during the 14 years on the opposition benches. So, they felt no one will remember the BS they were spouting in the run-up to the GE😂

Worryingly, come the Budget, the idiot in number 11 is fundamentally incompetent when it comes to managing
finances involving more than one pence. The UK will soon be properly stuffed, thanks to Starmer and his besties, Rayner and Reeves.

He's asked if the cutting of the winter fuel allowance for pensioners means that the Labour government does not care about social care, and he replies with how the government are planning to improve social care workers' conditions... Not a work about improving things for social care recipients.

Come on, at least give them some credit for their planning. Not confident that enough older folk will die off this winter without heating, they’re boosting the numbers by getting rid of as many people as possible who are in social care. Both moves are clearly measures to reduce the load on the NHS and social services.

Rachel Reeves to protect public sector workers from tax raid

This is a perverse circular money-go-round for the Treasury-funded public-sector employer to pay NIC's on their pension contributions for the Treasury to then give them the money back so that it doesn't adversely affect their budget. Meanwhile, the private sector gets hammered more.

I wonder when (if?) the penny will drop that it is the private sector - now just 50% of the country's economy vs. the two-thirds it represented in 2000 - that actually funds everything the public sector does?

Can we touch on the US election here ? Or should it be just in off-topic ?

I was bemused to see Donald Trump serving in McDonalds at the weekend, apparently in some kind of dig at his opponent who said she worked there when she was a student in 1983 .

I immediately noticed his ‘big hair’ and that he wasn’t wearing a hat or hairnet , as employees are required to do .

Then it occurred to me that , in the event of him losing the election, he might be trying out for a new position. For many years , McDonalds have had the clown Ronald McDonald as a comedy figurehead ; perhaps Ronald is ready for a well deserved retirement, to be replaced by a new clown : Donald McDonald !

Another possibility is that , since McDonald’s is known to be one of his favourite eateries , he might be looking to buy the business and rebrand the chain as Trump McDonald ?

Who to blame, since the period encompasses Tory and Labour eras?

So if we can't pin this tail on any one donkey then both sides are taking us to a more Gov't controlled future.

Can the financial sector of London support the whole UK economy when there is little private interest in getting stuck in?
Aside from eggs and basket cases concern, I might already know the answer.

Absolutely. I wonder if the Tories governing as though they were socialists had anything to do with their almost total annihilation at the last GE? 🤔

My personal view.
It wasn't the socialist style of the Tories that did it for 'em. The increasing trend has been for middle o' the road politics.
It's less risky than sticking their head up.
It pleases more of the masses.
They can steal some from t'other side by plagiarising policies.

After 14 years many just wanted change.
Covid made it clear to so many that the Tories are a self serving, corrupt bunch.
We watch, and listened, and got so tired of the intelligence insulting BS, so couldn't see a good future with 'em.

Increasingly, I say it like that as hard and fast Socialists will still cite that it's too early to tell, more recognise that Labour are part of a 2 tails penny.
More will swing away from Labour over the next couple of years, then Labour will gift us things to like 'em again as the election approaches.
Strange that the goodies can't be afforded now (aside from repaying union loyalty), but they can be in the election run up.

Watched the Labour Harridan in Chief, aka Deputy PM, today.
Lost count of the number of times she used "After 14 years of Tory failure etc.etc" and " We inherited........"
At what stage of Labour mis rule will they not be able to use the same lame excuses?

ISTR that last time around Labour were doing that well into the 2000s - 8 or 9 years after their 1997 election victory.

If we're short on liquidity, then maybe we can sell-off some assets. Oh, hang on, too late, we gave away the Chagos Islands for free.....

A typical Labour speech:

"14 years... inherited.... black hole.... Torries.... 14 years... inherited.... black hole.... 14 years.... Torries.... 14 years... inherited.... black hole.... Torries.... 14 years... inherited.... Tories... black hole.... Torries.... 14 years... inherited.... Tories.... black hole.... Torries.... "

While I agree about 'middle-of-the-road' politics (which is also what New Labour did under Tony Blair), I think that there's another element also in play here. It's always easy for a political party to implement policies that goes contrary to their own core manifesto, as long as they take a leaf out of the opposition's book. This is what Rishi Sunak did in 2020 with the Furlough Scheme - he did what a socialist Labour government would do, etc.

I see that Corbyn's calls for a wealth tax on anyone with a net worth greater than £10m (just for info, Starmer KC is just below that number at £8m) is gaining traction with his fellow economic dunces on the left.

The following as a great summary from someone on X that saves me describing why it would be an abject failure:

"We seem to have not learned from history. Before income tax, we taxed powder on wigs. People stopped wearing them, avoiding tax. We taxed windows, many were bricked up, avoiding tax. People worth over £10m have means to avoid further taxes on their wealth. Not evade, avoid. Any estimations, after a higher rate is introduced, only can presume that the money/wealth stays where it is now. It won't. There will always be access for people in this bracket to move or recalibrate taxable wealth elsewhere."

Wouldn't that lose the (individual's of) support from Unite.
With so much dosh having disappeared into an aperture of darkness, there must be a few exec's with that sort of dosh now.

You omitted a couple of "tough decisions"

Ask the SNP They have had 17 years in power but it is still everyone else's fault!
