18MPG is good around town - my former W126 used to do 12 (ish) MPG and the engine was running sweet (big/heavy car...)

No, if Tesco were running that policy then they would just crush the car with them in it. Saves the cost of ammunition.

Now that you mention it, perhaps that should be a blanket policy for all the crap modded Novas/Saxos/Corsas & yoof that hang around in the Tesco car park and fuel up there. (Could be a bit tough on the odd Mummy as it is her car really but then she should not have let Wayne, Jason or Darren mess around with it in the first place. )

Add my name to that list. I've never done the above, but I certainly would if the following conditions were true.
i) there was a Tesco petrol station nearby,
ii) it was a Sunday after 4pm,
iii) I desparately needed some groceries.

The offical figures for the E320 saloon (I don't have coupe numbers to hand) are:

Urban 19.19 mpg (CLK = 17-ish)
56mph 34.48 mpg (CLK = 33-ish - 'extra urban')
75mph 28.25 mpg (CLK = 24-ish - 'combined')

I'm certainly less than 7% out on these numbers, and so I'm happy.

In fact, the two sets of stats appear to be really closely matched, so I guess it's down to the kind of driving the car does.

Tell you what Howard, what say I borrow the CLK for, ooh, a month or two, and see what consumption figures I get out of it?

My R129 is great on a long run, I've had almost 30 mpg from a tankful with a lot of motorway driving. Official "EUDC" consumption is 28.5. Stop/start is a different story, the official "city" consumption is 12.9 ...

Non-fuel sales are where most petrol stations make the money particularly in areas where competition keeps fuel prices down and it's sold at cost.In my area apart from supermarkets petrol retailers without stores went out of business or are attached to garages or car sales outlets.There's no money to be made in fuel retailing alone.

How about this? At the front of every till queue is a speak-your-weight machine! That'd speed the queue up no-end and probably encourage more online purchases

When i spend £85.00 to fill the SClass i don't want to queue in front of people who are there to buy £2.00 of sweets and a carton of milk, all i get when i suggest they have a food till is we are short staffed

Usually at the local Tesco's they sometimes allocate one line to just fuel purchases so its not too bad. Though I'll admit, when I fill up I usually pick up some basic groceries too.

What gets me is when youre in the queue and someone fills up at a card pay pump, and then goes into the shop to pay with a (youve guessed it) card

At the Tesco Petrol Station I have used all the pumps accept cards or give the option to pay at the Kiosk and the driver has to speciify which option by pressing the button first before fuel is released from the pump...

One thing which really really riles me about tescos is 24 hours..

On our local Tesco, 24 hours are posted everywhere yet the store is shut after 10pm!!!!

If you go to the supermarket, to buy some beer, and the person in front of you in the queue at the checkout is only buying bread, do you get ****y because he's in your way?

What's the difference between you arriving at the petrol station to find the pumps are all occupied by people filling up, and arriving to find the pumps are all occupied by people paying for stuff in the kiosk? You still have to wait for a bit!

If the petrol station chooses to sell things other than petrol, why shouldn't people buy them? It's not their fault the forecourt has no other parking!

Bear in mind, if they didn't sell groceries as well a fuel, then very soon, the petrol station wouldn't be there at all, and then you 'd have to drive even further to sit in a queue!
